CT Scan

Computed Tomography (CT) scanning is an advanced diagnostic imaging tool increasingly used in veterinary care for exotic animal pets, such as reptiles, birds, and small mammals. This non-invasive technique produces detailed cross-sectional images of the body, allowing veterinarians to accurately assess internal structures, identify abnormalities, and diagnose conditions that may be difficult to detect with traditional X-rays. CT scans are especially valuable for visualizing complex anatomy in exotic species, including the skull, respiratory system, and soft tissues. By providing precise and rapid imaging, CT enhances treatment planning and improves outcomes in exotic animal medicine.

Most animals will need to be sedated briefly for CT scans, but some (like tortoises) can be scanned awake as they will remain still for long enough! Sedated animals are closely monitored during the time they are being imaged.
